God’s word continuously points us toward one end: Jesus’ fame among all tribes, tongues, and nations. Followers of Jesus are called to make disciples of all nations. Regardless of what culture, context, or career we are in, the direction of our lives must point toward the glory of God being made know to all nations! All believers can be involved in the great commission by: giving, going, welcoming internationals, praying, and mobilizing!

“Without Dread of Disaster” (Proverbs 1)

This week’s begins a new series from the most prominent book of the Bible within that group we label “Wisdom Literature.” The first part of this series will focus on the first nine chapters which form an introduction to the whole book. In this first message we will make an overview of chapter 1, asking God to stir in our hearts a love and aspiration for wisdom. We will celebrates the benefits of living wisely in a world full of disasters. Throughout the series we will exalt Christ as the perfection of Wisdom and the only source of it. We will note our own folly and our need for Christ as Savior. We will seek to honor the practical blessings of applying the everyday wisdom of this book to our everyday lives. Prepare for worship this day by reading Job 28, identifying the source of true wisdom. Reflect on James 3 and the reality that there is more than one wisdom at work in our lives seeking to lure our hearts toward it (much like the two “women” in the first nine chapters of Proverbs vie for the attention of young men. Note the connections between James’ teaching and the significant place Solomon gives to matters of the tongue.

This Lord’s Day is Gideon Sunday and the first Sunday after Resurrection Day. It is a day in which to celebrate the power of God’s word, the Bible, as it is scattered as seed through the distribution efforts of our local Gideons and their brothers around the world supported by their wives in the auxiliary. The message will rise from Jesus encounter with the two disciples walking on the road away from Jerusalem on the day of the Resurrection. We read the account in Luke 24:13-35. We will reinforce the purpose of the Scriptures and their power in our lives for life and godliness. We will examine Jesus’ confidence in the written word. Prepare for worship by reading Psalm 19 and noting the impact God’s written word has on a person’s life. Read Revelation 1 and note how the Risen Christ chooses to express his authority over his Church.

In the weeks leading up to Easter, we have been examining the days of the “week” of Jesus’ life from his arrival at Jerusalem until his departure from the city to the cross. We have considered (roughly) a day from that week on each Lord’s Day of March and the first week of April. On Good Friday (April 6) we will consider the day of the crucifixion. This Sunday we will look at that first day of the new era (not just a new week) initiated by Christ’s resurrection.

“Why Are You Weeping?”

We come to Easter and the glorious resurrection of the one who died and is now alive forevermore. We will survey the events of this day and consider in detail the encounter Mary has with Jesus in the garden recorded in John 20:11-18. She wrestles with fear and doubt but continues to seek Jesus. Prepare for worship by reading the various accounts of the resurrection in the gospels. Note how Jesus extends a ministry of peace to his disciples. In what ways to Jesus reassure Mary? Jesus places emphasis on his ascension. We will explore why in the message.
